Jean Dorothy MacBain passed away peacefully Sunday, October 7, 2018 at the age of 96 at NHC HealthCare, Bluffton, SC. She was born in Flushing, Long Island (NY), daughter of the late Fred and Henrietta Gromann Melgard, raised in White Plains NY and attended White Plains High School and later, Vermont University. With the outbreak of WWII, Jean became an interviewer for NY Central Railroad, now Grand Central, where she met naval officer Donald “Zerr” MacBain, the love of her life and husband of 50 years, living in San Francisco, Los Angeles, NYC and Aston, PA. Jean took great pride in being a stay-at-home mom, engaging in her children’s school and sports activities, leading a Brownie Scout troop, and serving as a village “alderman” in Media PA. When her younger children were in high school, she worked as an office administrator at the local high school. She enjoyed lunch with the ladies, shopping for bargains, and world travel with her husband in retirement.
Jean is preceded in death by a son, Frederick G. MacBain, her husband Donald Zerr MacBain, and her brother Frederick Melgard. She is survived by a stepson, Edward Z. MacBain (Loretta), Boise, ID and six of her seven children: Donna Russell Brennan (Terrence) of Hilton Head SC, Donald Z. MacBain (Linda), Walnut Creek CA, Christine J. Atkinson (Tom), Medford, OR, Hans T. MacBain (Donna), Wilmington DE, Eric F. MacBain (Carol), Blue Bell, PA and Arthur G. MacBain (Patty), Springfield PA. Jean was grandmother of 9, auntie of 3, a great grandmother of 9 and great aunt of 5. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
