Sherry E. Conohan died on July 4, 2015 at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina after a long illness. She was 75 years old. She was born in St. Louis Missouri , grew up in New Orleans, and attended Sacred Heart School in St. Louis.
Sherry had a career in journalism that spanned more than 50 years. She began her career with a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri. She was vice president of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and was past president of the University of Missouri Alumni Association of New Jersey.
As a journalist, She worked in Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, New York, and New Jersey. She had numerous assignments for UPI and Gannett and traveled extensively. Sherry reported directly from the tumultuous 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago. Sherry's forte was political reporting and also covered many of the larger New Jersey crime investigations.
She won many journalism awards and was an active member of the Society of Professional Journalists and the Journalism and Women Symposium.
Sherry was a die-hard fan of the New York Giants and the New York Mets
Sherry married the late Karl Houser Jr. in 1972 and resided in Monmouth Beach New Jersey between 1972 and 2011.Together they enjoyed sailing at the Shrewsbury Sailing and Yacht Club, life at the Jersey Shore and trips to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Sherry doted on her step children and is survived by Randall and Jean Houser of Charleston SC, Geoffrey Houser of Fredricksund Denmark, Brad and Patti Houser of California, and Kristen and Paul Rivers of Jackson Wyoming along with her dear friend Carolyn O'Connell. Sherry was also a loving grandmother to 9 nine grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents Mervyn J and Elizabeth G. Conohan, and her step daughter in law, Anne Griesen, wife of Geoff.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Cypress, the Preston Health Center, Hilton Head and Candler Hospitals, and Tideland Hospice . There will be a visitation for friends and family on Wednesday July 15, from 4:00pm-6:00pm at the Island Funeral Home , Hilton Head, and a Presbyterian graveside service with arrangements there by Bringhurst Funeral Home at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd Pa. on Friday, July 17 at 1:00p.m.
