Sarah Orr Allen
November 26, 1925 - February 19, 2017
Sarah Orr Allen, 91, of Hilton Head Island died Sunday, February 19, 2017. She was the beloved wife of the late Colonel Fred E. Allen, daughter of Victor Henry Orr and Mamie Irene Sloan of Mecklenburg County, N.C. She is survived by her children, Fred E. Allen (April) of Columbia, S.C., Richard B. Allen (Brooke) of Hilton Head, S.C., David Allen, Weezy Allen Alcott (Troy) of Beaufort, S.C. and Sarah Allen Young (Craig) of New York; grandchildren, C. Hunter Allen of Mt Pleasant, S.C.; Sarah E. Allen, J. Chalmers Allen and Charles A. Allen of Columbia, SC; Gage Jester, R. Bryan Allen and Emma Lawton Allen of Hilton Head, S.C., Lila Hunter Alcott of Beaufort, S.C. and Warner Allen Young of New York and great grandson, Jackson Hunter Allen of Columbia, S.C.
Sarah graduated from Queens College, Charlotte, N.C. (Presbyterian Hospital) School of Nursing. She shared travels and life with her husband of 56 years, Colonel Fred Allen (US Army) and their five children in duty stations in three countries and five states. She moved us through countless homes and schools in our travels. Home was not always a long-fixed place. It was where we were all together. She and our father are together at home again. We know they will have spare rooms ready for us.
She cared for and loved us through good behavior and bad. A proud descendant of Scots Presbyterians who settled in Mecklenburg County, N.C., our mother had a well developed sense of right and wrong, but didn't let it interfere with finding forgiveness for our shortcomings. She never quit on a child. She bore the difficulties of her later years with determination and grace. A splendid example.
Sarah gave generously of her time to efforts she thought made a difference. She helped children and adults learn to read through literacy projects in York County. A former nurse, she found time to give to Volunteers in Medicine.
Words are not enough to express the gratitude her family feels for the devotion of Kateria Martinez. Her smiling good humor, selfless love and compassion made every day great for Mom. She cared for her as though she was her own mother.
We are also grateful to Aravia, Laverne, Valerie and Desiree, whose help in caring for Sarah is deeply appreciated.
Funeral Services are Monday, March 27 at 11 am at Hilton Head Presbyterian Church, Hilton Head Island, SC with the graveside service at Beaufort National Cemetery at 1 pm.
