Jean Frances Cook
Jean Frances Cook, 89, of Hilton Head, SC passed away peacefully on July 18, 2017 following a brief illness. Jean was born on September 11, 1927 in Hudson, New York to William Frances Fitzgerald and Laura Decker Fitzgerald. She graduated with a degree in nursing from Syracuse University in January 1950 and in May 1950 married Bruce Watson of Brookfield, Connecticut where they built their home. While raising her family, she pursued a nursing career in many settings including hospital, public health, school clinic, and at her retirement in 1987 at an institution for the mentally disabled. Jean was widowed in 1975, and in 1993 married Alan J. Cook, her high school sweetheart. They enjoyed homes in Brookfield and Kinderhook, NY until his death in 2012.
Jean is survived by three daughters (Linda Anne Watson of Hilton Head, Carol Jean Watson of Nice, France, and Laura Marie Brodeur of Pensacola, Florida), three sons-in-law (William Cooper, Angelo Bonfiglioli and Daniel Brodeur), three grandchildren (Jesse Brodeur, Bonnie Brodeur (Adam Duce) and Gemma Bonfiglioli), one great-granddaughter (Olivia Duce), two nephews and three nieces. She is predeceased by husbands Bruce Watson and Alan Cook.
Jean will be remembered by all who knew her as a kind, loving and compassionate person filled with a calm grace and positive energy. She will be remembered by her daughters as a loving guide and role model who inspired by her example the joy of reading and learning, fully supportive of the various paths they have pursued in life, and of their passions for sports, music, pets and the outdoors. She was Girl Scout Leader, baker, expert seamstress (matching outfits at Easter and fabulous Halloween costumes), bridge player, garden club member, world traveler, gracious hostess, creator of beautiful cross-stitch masterpieces and lover of tag sales and summers at Kinderhook Lake in upstate New York.
In 2014, Jean moved from Connecticut to the Cypress in Hilton Head where she participated in many activities including the Library Committee, trivia, bingo, wie bowling, and canasta, and where she was a star of the stair-climbing challenge for physical fitness. The family is so grateful for the love and support of her many wonderful friends there and for the caring staff of the Cypress and of the Preston Health Center.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Saint Francis by the Sea Catholic Church, Hilton Head, on Monday, August 7th at 2:00 pm, followed by a reception at the Cypress Club, 20 Lady Slipper Lane, Hilton Head Plantation.
