On June 26, 2017, Glorianne Fischer Carlin, our dearest mother and friend left us peacefully. She was born in Covington, Kentucky on January 2, 1928, the daughter of the late Harry and Estelle Fischer. Glorianne grew up in Northern Kentucky and graduated from Notre Dame Academy in 1945. She met the love of her life at a family wedding. It was love at first sight…she was 12 years old and he was 16! Glorianne married James Kearney Carlin in 1946. They spent 58 wonderful years together. The newlyweds moved to Chicago, then returned to Northern Kentucky where Jim and Glorianne raised 3 children.
Once settled in Northern Kentucky, Glorianne dedicated herself to family and involvement in charitable, social and civic organizations. She chaired many fundraisers, always exceeding her goals for children’s schools and local charities, including Chairman of the Seminary Ball raising funds for the St. Pius X Seminary.
Glorianne enjoyed politics in Northern Kentucky. In 1974, she was elected to the Fort Mitchell City Council. She was re-elected for 4 terms. She was Chairman of the Administration Department, Chairman of Recreation and Public relations.
In 1978, she was appointed to the State of Kentucky Municipal League. She was not only one of two women on the Board, but also the only non-mayor on the State Municipal Board. As Director, she served on several Task Forces, including Cable TV Communications, Transit Authority, Planning and Development, KML General Revenue.
In 1987, the couple moved permanently to Hilton Head Island. She and Jim lived for 16 years in their dream home in Shipyard Plantation. Together they supported each other and created a beautiful life and fell in love with Hilton Head Island. Once again, Glorianne became active in her church, Holy Family Catholic Church and in 1988 joined the Women’s Association of Hilton Hed Island. In 1995, she was elected President of the Association and served on the Board for 6 years.
In 1993, Jim was elected to the Hilton Head Island Town Council. Glorianne supported him, and they both served on local boards, and she served as Chairman of fundraisers in the community, including opening their home for tours of her lifelong collections of Christmas Trees. In 1995 the Antique Road Show TV Production featured their home and Christmas collections.
Glorianne loved to travel and entertain in her home. She was a gourmet cook and enjoyed decorating. She was an accomplished seamstress, she designed and made most of her clothing. Her passion and joy was her family. She loved her children and grandchildren. Glorianne lit up the room with her smile. She will be remembered for her grace, compassion, elegance and her dedication to family.
Glorianne was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Kearney Carlin in 2005. She will be deeply missed by her loving family, James P. Carlin, his wife Pam, Victorianne Carlin Head, husband, Bill and Kathleen Ann Carlin-Edson, husband John. Grandchildren include Lisa Carlin, Kelly Carlin, Jamie Carlin Campbell, Robby Niehaus, Carly Niehaus, Patrick Niehaus, Whitney Head and Michael Head. Great grandchildren include, Lily Carlin and Quinn Campbell.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 30, from 4 to 7 pm at The Island Funeral Home and Crematory. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held Saturday at 9 am at Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will be private at Six Oaks Cemetery.
