Elaine Brogan - McCall, 84, of Hilton Head, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2017 at Hilton Head Hospital.
Elaine lived her life with great zest, adventure and enthusiasm. She often followed her heart, which at times literally changed the course of her life. At one point she went on a vacation to Germany, to visit her brother, Bob, who was in the US Army. While there, her nephew (Bob’s son) Paul was born. Following her enthusiastic nature and her love for her family, she simply decided to stay! She quit her job in the states, took an auditing position with the US Army and moved in with her brother and his family. A testament to her spontaneity and willingness to let life unfold!
Elaine’s love for adventure through travel was a constant throughout her life. In her early years trips to her family homeland of Italy were a favorite, in her 70’s she could be found heli-hiking through Machu Picchu with her husband, Ed!
Besides being incredibly kind, caring and fun, Elaine was a pioneer. She was the first women partner of one of the original Big Eight accounting firms back at a time when the New York accounting profession (which means the entire profession, like many others of that era) was almost entirely male dominated. As a young professional, she could never get the high-profile assignments for the firm’s blue chip clients because they wouldn’t accept women auditors at that time. So, Elaine followed the opportunities available to her, worked hard, applied her sharp wit and intuitive grasp of the numbers and eventually became the firm’s CFO - the accountant’s accountant!
Elaine lived most of her life in New Jersey, born December 10, 1932 in Hoboken. After she began her career, she and her mother, Ida, moved to Wayne, NJ. Eventually Elaine moved to Fort Lee where she and her first husband, Jim, enjoyed many happy years together. After Elaine’s retirement she and her mother moved to Hilton Head and she purchased a home next door to her brother, Bob!
In Hilton Head, Elaine enjoyed playing Mahjong, bridge and golfing with her friends. She was lucky in life and soon met her second husband, Ed, at the golf club. Ed and Elaine loved to be together; one of Elaine’s friends recently described them as inseparable.
Elaine had the spirit of play; evidenced by the endless supply of donuts she kept in the house, the elf that was constantly hiding with secret notes and daily sightings of the alligators outside her home. A special place for children in the family, they loved visiting her! Elaine was never short on love for others and she was easy to love.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Clemente and Ida Cereghini; her brother, Robert Cereghini; her first husband, James Brogan; and her second husband, Ed McCall.
Elaine is survived by her nieces and nephews with whom she was very close, their mothers, 13 great-nieces and nephews, her step children; and many other family and friends who loved her deeply and will miss her bright smile and playful laughter.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 1:00 pm at the Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary St, Beaufort, SC 29902. After the services, Elaine’s relatives and friends are invited to lunch at the South Carolina Yacht Club to celebrate Elaine’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, PO Box 3827, Bluffton, SC 29910. Arrangements are being made by the Island Funeral Home. islandfuneralhome.com
